The River is Boston's only homegrown, independent music station since 1994. By playing music that many of its listeners grew up with – from the Beatles, U2, R.E.M. and Police – to Bob Marley, the Dave Matthews Band and Michael Franti – along with contemporary artists like Adele, The Black Keys, Jack Johnson, Ray Lamontagne and River rising stars like Mumford & Sons, Decemberists and Florence + The Machine – the River is a refreshing mix of contemporary rock music from the 1970s to today. This is a station not afraid to take chances. The River loves to play local music, deep tracks and new music. Local artists and bands often receive their first airplay on The River, some of which become national acts such as The Pixies, Guster, Susan Tedeschi, and Matt Nathanson. Every hour The River plays deep tracks that are rarely played on radio, as well as many new songs that are heard only on The River. By keeping the music fresh and uniquely Boston, the River creates a passionate connection with its listeners. The River’s audience is passionate, loyal and active in and around Boston’s famed music scene.
