Kittie is an all-female Canadian metal band formed in London, Ontario in 1996. Kittie rose to fame in 1999 following the release of the single "Brackish" from their gold-rated debut album Spit. Kittie's biggest selling album was 1999's "Spit" which sold 1,250,000 copies worldwide. Their 2001 sophomore follow up "Oracle" sold over 225,000 units in the US and 100,000 units internationally. 2004's "Until The End" sold over 75,000 units in the US. 2009's "In The Black" sold 15,000 units in the US. The bands E.P's sold moderately well without any major promotion. 2000's "Paperdoll" sold 100,000 units in the US, and 2002's "Safe" sold 25,000 units. The bands combined album sales in Canada have reached upwards of 60,000 units by 2012. The band had a string of MTV2, MTV and Fuse Network music video hits which included, "Brackish", "Charlotte", "What I Always Wanted", "Into The Darkness", "Cut Throat", "Sorrow I Know" and "Empires (Part II)". American Active Rock radio hits (all which charted within the Top 50 of the Radio & Records Active Rock chart) include "Brackish", "Charlotte", "What I Always Wanted", "Into The Darkness" and their biggest US hit single "Funeral For Yesterday". As of 2014 the band are temporarily on hiatus (although they have ideas and some demo's), focusing on a 20th anniversary book and documentary set to be released in 2016, as well as pursuing other careers as a source of income. The band have released statements on their Facebook page confirming the desire to tour as soon as possible, although nothing is set in stone yet.

Kittie became one of the last DIY bands that emerged from the underground and become international Pop Stars almost overnight. Their debut album was released during a time when the old model of the music industry began to decline and die out. The band always embraced new ways of promoting and distributing music. Although the band is somewhat historically lumped into the late 90s/early 2000's "Nu Metal" scene, they proved they were worth their salt by continually touring and becoming better musicians with the release of every album. The band managed to evolve and stay vital with every new line up. They are considered to be one of the most important Female Metal bands in history and especially for the Y generation.
